ARTS AND ARCHITECTURE
Read: Ebru Paper Marbling - An Ancient Art that Crossed Continents
For over two millennia, from about 200 BCE to the 15th century CE, the oasis towns of Central Asia and Silk Road cities of Eurasia witnessed an exchange of cultures that had no precedent in human history (followed by a modern-day global exchange of cultures that is ongoing). After the 15th century, cultural exchanges intensified along the maritime routes. The impact on Eastern and Western arts and on architecture was from a wide range of sources, such as religions (Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, Taoism, Confucianism and Islam), cultures, practical techniques, as well as from knowledge concerning commerce, medicine, printing, engineering, philosophy, astronomy, and geography. Along these overland and maritime routes cities were born and reborn, as conquests were made, while armies and conquerors, holy men, envoys, travelers and explorers interacted with merchants, imparting and spreading their knowledge.
